Nine Injured in Shooting at Airbnb Birthday Party in Ohio

A shooting early Sunday morning at an Airbnb rental in Bath Township, Ohio, left nine individuals injured, prompting an extensive police investigation. The incident occurred around 12:16 a.m. at a residence located on Top of the Hill Drive, which was hosting a large birthday party that had been promoted on social media, attracting a significant crowd.

Upon arrival, officers from the Bath Township Police Department encountered a chaotic scene. According to Police Chief Vito Sinopoli, officers quickly provided life-saving aid to the injured. The victims, a mix of juveniles and adults, were transported to local hospitals for treatment, but their current conditions have not been disclosed. “Our deepest sympathy goes out to the victims, families, and all those affected by this devastating incident,” Sinopoli stated during a press briefing.

Witnesses reported that an unknown suspect or suspects opened fire from the first floor of the home before fleeing the scene. Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including police and fire departments from surrounding areas, responded promptly. Sinopoli emphasized the community’s commitment to addressing such violence, stating, “This kind of violence is unacceptable in our community, and we’re committed to applying all available resources to this investigation.”

Investigation Underway

The Bath Township Detective Bureau, with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, is actively working to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses to identify those responsible for the shooting. In light of the incident, police are also coordinating with Airbnb and the property owner as part of the ongoing investigation. Notably, short-term rentals are currently prohibited under Bath Township zoning regulations.

An Airbnb spokesperson expressed condolences, stating, “We are heartbroken by this senseless act of gun violence, and our thoughts are with the injured victims and all those affected by it.” The company confirmed that it acted swiftly to suspend the property listing and removed the account of the individual who booked the stay in violation of Airbnb’s policies against unauthorized gatherings.

The property had been purchased for $1.2 million in 2022 by Michael Jones, who is currently facing federal mail and wire fraud charges in Nevada. Prosecutors allege that Jones defrauded small businesses of millions of dollars through unfulfilled grant-writing services. He was sentenced to six and a half years in prison but transferred ownership of the home to his wife, Shauna Gardner, prior to his imprisonment. Efforts to reach Gardner for comment have not been successful.

Community Response and Concerns

In the wake of the shooting, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik expressed concern over the incident, particularly regarding the involvement of young people at the party. In a statement, he remarked, “The reports of so many young people at a rented house party are very concerning.” Malik highlighted the need for collaborative efforts between parents, youth organizations, and local government to ensure the safety of the community’s youth.
