UPDATE: Renowned Oklahoma photographer Jakian Parks has just unveiled his powerful new exhibit, ‘The Black Land: Rituals and Rejoicing’, celebrating the rich heritage of black rodeos in Oklahoma. This exhibit reflects a unique cultural identity and is on display at Oklahoma Contemporary, drawing immediate attention from art enthusiasts and the community.

Parks, donning a distinctive black Stetson and roper heels, recalls his early days filled with dreams of rodeos and cowboy boots. “This is like a homecoming for me,” he stated. Accompanied by creative partner Chloe Flowers, Parks meticulously curated years of photographs highlighting the vibrant community of black cowboys and the significance of land ownership, horsemanship, and cultural pride in this region.

The exhibit features images from notable locations including a ranch in Jones, OK, a church in Arcadia, OK, and the annual Boley, OK rodeo. “He has a vision. He has an idea,” said Foster, Parks’ longtime friend, emphasizing the importance of the project. “I really think about what he wanted it to mean and what he wanted it to say.”

Trent Riley, Executive Director of Oklahoma Contemporary, highlighted the exhibit’s significance, stating, “These images interconnect a historic part of our state’s long, black history with the modern black cowboy,” underlining the urgent need for representation and recognition.

The exhibit opens doors to explore a narrative where the West exists in a different shade—one filled with resilience and determination. As the community rallies around this artistic endeavor, the emotional impact is palpable, inviting viewers to engage with the stories behind each photograph.

For those eager to experience this unique celebration of culture and heritage, the exhibit is currently on display. Don’t miss the chance to witness the powerful storytelling through the lens of Jakian Parks.
