VTA Launches Veterans Pass with Discounted Fares for Heroes
UPDATE: The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has just announced a special initiative to honor U.S. military veterans this Veterans Day. Starting now, veterans can purchase a discounted fare pass, allowing them to ride VTA buses and light rail for only $1.00 per single ride through the end of the year.
This initiative is designed to provide significant savings, offering more than 50% off the standard fare. The discounted rides come with unlimited transfers within two hours of activation, making public transportation both affordable and accessible for those who have bravely served the nation.
Veterans can obtain the Veterans Pass exclusively through the Token Transit app. To ensure eligibility, they must present valid proof of their veteran status upon request from a VTA Operator or Fare Inspector. Accepted forms of identification include the Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC), Veteran ID Card (VIC), Department of Defense (DoD) Identification Card, or a state-issued driver’s license with a veteran’s designation.
This pilot program reflects VTA’s commitment to supporting veterans while exploring new methods to improve public transportation accessibility across Santa Clara County. In a show of solidarity, VTA will also participate in the upcoming San Jose Veterans Day Parade, celebrating and honoring local heroes.
For more information about the Veterans Pass, you can visit vta.org or contact VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300.
Note: This discounted fare program is available only during the pilot period, with any unused tickets set to expire at the end of 2025. Future considerations regarding permanent fare changes will involve extensive public engagement and thorough analyses to ensure equitable access for all riders.
This initiative not only underscores the value of veterans but also seeks to enhance their mobility within the community. As the program rolls out, veterans are encouraged to take advantage of this vital support to ease their transportation needs.
