The University of Hawaii at Hilo has secured $15 million in capital improvement funding, enabling the institution to commence essential maintenance and renovation projects across the campus. This funding, announced last week by Gov. Josh Green through a statement from state Sen. Lorraine Inouye, aims to enhance facilities that serve students and the broader Hawaii Island community.

Inouye emphasized the significance of these investments, stating, “Investments like this strengthen our educational infrastructure and ensure our students have access to a modern, high-quality learning environment.” The funding supports several critical upgrades, including improvements to student housing and air-conditioning systems.

According to UH Hilo Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs Kalei Rapoza, the funding request was approved by the Board of Regents and submitted as part of the biennium budget request to the Legislature. Rapoza noted that this funding allows the university to “move forward with procurement for design and construction” on four key projects that have emerged as priorities in recent years.

Details of Renovation Projects

The projects slated for funding in the fiscal year 2026 include a comprehensive renovation of air-conditioning systems, upgrades to the agricultural facility to facilitate modern instruction, and enhancements to student housing. Additionally, plans include the design of a replacement for the existing built-up roofing systems.

Rapoza highlighted the importance of addressing deferred maintenance proactively. “Addressing deferred maintenance early allows repairs to be completed efficiently, preventing relatively simple issues from escalating,” he explained. This approach is expected to minimize downtime and protect critical assets.

Chancellor Bonnie Irwin expressed gratitude for the support from the governor and the Legislature, stating, “We are grateful for the support that will allow us to better serve our students through improved facilities.”

Rapoza anticipates that contracts for the renovation work will be in place by spring 2026, with construction expected to commence in 2027. The timely allocation of this funding is poised to significantly enhance the educational environment at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, ultimately benefiting both students and faculty alike.
