The Berks Ballet Theatre (BBT) is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special production of “The Nutcracker” on December 20 and 21, 2023. The performances will take place at Kutztown University’s Schaeffer Auditorium, featuring three shows that promise to delight audiences of all ages. Tickets are available starting at $43 through BerksBalletTheatre.com.

This landmark production not only honors BBT’s rich legacy but also showcases a fresh artistic vision under the direction of Artistic Director Nathan Bland. Audiences can anticipate a vibrant display of choreography, new costumes, and the accompaniment of a full live orchestra, all hallmarks of BBT’s celebrated version of this holiday classic.

A particularly special element of this year’s performance is the return of alumna Jessica Bealer, who will portray the Sugar Plum Fairy. Bealer, currently dancing with the Rochester City Ballet in New York, trained at the Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance. Her participation symbolizes the enduring impact of BBT’s training programs and its community spirit. Bland expressed, “Jessica’s return is a beautiful symbol of what this anniversary represents — generations of dancers whose journeys began right here at our studios in Berks County.”

The 50th anniversary production introduces exciting updates to the beloved classic. New choreography and costume enhancements add an innovative touch, including the debut of costumes for the Waltz of the Snowflakes and refreshed designs for Marzipan and Candy Cane. More than 75 performers will take the stage, comprising BBT’s Pre-Professional Company, Conservatory students, and community members, alongside professional guest artists.

The performances will feature live music from the Reading Pops Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Willis M. Rapp, a Kutztown University alumnus. This marks Rapp’s seventh season with BBT, ensuring that the musical accompaniment enhances the overall experience.

In addition to the main performances, BBT will host a festive Sugar Plum Fairy Tea Party on December 3, 2023, at 13:30 at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading. This enchanting event will include a preview performance of “The Nutcracker,” story time with costumed characters, crafts for children, and a selection of sweet treats. Tickets for the tea party are also available at BerksBalletTheatre.com.

BBT’s 50th anniversary production of “The Nutcracker” not only commemorates a significant milestone but also highlights the theatre’s ongoing commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement. As the curtain rises on December 20, audiences can look forward to a performance that promises to be both nostalgic and innovative.
