Camden Hills Wins First State Championship in Historic Victory
URGENT UPDATE: Camden Hills has made history by clinching its first-ever state football championship with a stunning 52-26 victory over Spruce Mountain on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine. The Windjammers dominated the game, showcasing a powerful offensive performance led by quarterback Hollis Schwalm.
This landmark win marks a significant milestone for Camden Hills, as the team closed its season with an impressive 10-1 record. Schwalm, playing in his final game, was instrumental, scoring three rushing touchdowns and throwing for another, contributing a staggering 32 points to the team’s total.
In the days leading up to the championship, Schwalm found motivation in newly hung banners at the school, declaring, “That needs to change,” referring to the absence of dates on their football accolades. His determination fueled a commanding performance that left the Windjammers celebrating at midfield as champions.
“We played with utter heart, grit and determination today,” said head coach Chris Christie. “They just weren’t going to be denied today.”
The Windjammers took an early lead of 8-0 in the first quarter and maintained control throughout the game, leading 32-12 at halftime. Schwalm’s ability to adjust plays on the fly showcased his skill and the strong communication with his coaching staff.
Meanwhile, Spruce Mountain, which finished its season at 8-2, struggled to keep pace despite efforts from players like Dylan Jewett, who scored both on the ground and through the air.
Camden Hills’ defense was equally impressive, forcing five turnovers, including key interceptions that stifled Spruce Mountain’s momentum. The team’s defensive efforts were highlighted by Braden Beveridge, who not only scored a touchdown but also intercepted two passes.
“This is the stuff you dream about since you’re six years old,” Beveridge expressed, reflecting on the emotional significance of the victory. “It’s amazing.”
With this championship, Camden Hills can finally etch its name on the previously blank banner in the gym, a testament to the hard work and dedication of players and coaches alike. The team has evolved since becoming a full-fledged varsity program in 2009, overcoming numerous challenges, including a canceled season in 2015 due to player safety concerns.
Looking ahead, Coach Christie expressed optimism for the future, noting that many team members are underclassmen. “This is a special group,” he said. “We checked our egos and really just started playing together as a team.”
The Windjammers outscored their opponents 292-154 during the regular season and achieved a remarkable 134-26 in the playoffs, highlighting their dominance on the field.
As the excitement settles, Camden Hills football fans can relish this historic moment, knowing their team has firmly established itself in the annals of school history as champions.
