Colorado Secures Sundance Film Festival, Celebrates Inclusivity

On April 8, 2024, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a significant Tax Incentive bill aimed at attracting the prestigious Sundance Film Festival to Boulder. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the city, which successfully outbid 60 other applicants for the festival. The event is expected to generate substantial economic benefits, drawing on the festival’s impressive track record of financial impact, as evidenced by its contribution of $132 million to Utah’s economy in 2024, including $13.8 million in tax revenue and $69.7 million in wages.

The announcement of the festival’s relocation to Boulder will not only enhance the local economy but also solidify the city’s reputation as a hub for creativity and culture. Events and celebrations tied to the festival will primarily occur in Downtown Boulder, a vibrant area poised to thrive from this influx of visitors and industry attention.

Celebrating a Legacy of Inclusivity

Bettina Swigger, CEO of the Downtown Boulder Partnership, expressed gratitude to the collaborative efforts that made this achievement possible. She highlighted the contributions of the Visit Boulder team, the city, and the state in securing the festival for Colorado. Swigger likened this occasion to historical milestones for the business community, referencing former City Council member George Karakehian, who identified this moment as one of three transformative events for Boulder’s economy.

Reflecting on Boulder’s legacy of inclusivity, Swigger noted the historic significance of Clela Rorex, a county clerk who, on March 26, 1973, became the first in the nation to issue a same-sex marriage license. This act of courage set a precedent for the city, making it a beacon of progress and acceptance. As Swigger pointed out, the day before the Sundance announcement was the 50th anniversary of Rorex’s groundbreaking decision.

Governor Polis, married to a man, utilized this occasion to emphasize the importance of inclusivity in today’s societal landscape. A Historic Designation for Boulder
