Indiana Awards $42M in Recycling Grants; New PNW License Plate Launches
UPDATE: Indiana announces a groundbreaking initiative, awarding a staggering $42 million in grants to enhance recycling efforts across the state, including a significant contribution to Goodwill Industries of Michiana in Lake County. This funding, confirmed by the Indiana Recycling Market Development Board, aims to divert an impressive 197,884 tons of materials from landfills each year, creating 42 jobs in the process.
The grants, administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, will allow Goodwill to receive $301,011 specifically to increase the diversion of 32,812 tons of recyclable materials annually. Other notable recipients include CT Polymers in Marshall County with $500,000 and Greencycle in Marion County with $453,989.
In a separate development, Governor Mike Braun has appointed residents from Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties to vital state boards and commissions. Key appointments include Elizabeth Bergeron to the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Commission and Rick Smith to the Underground Plant Protection Advisory Committee. These roles are critical in shaping policies that affect local communities.
Indiana Dunes Tourism is also making headlines by launching a new grant program, offering $50,000 for community projects aimed at attracting visitors to Porter County. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on December 1, 2025, with successful applicants announced on January 5, 2026.
In health news, Dr. Marrium Siddiqui, an infectious disease physician, has joined the Franciscan Physician Network in Crown Point and is currently accepting new patients. Dr. Siddiqui earned her medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University and completed her residency in internal medicine at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.
Additionally, the Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association has opened applications for its mentoring program. This initiative aims to support the next generation of women leaders through structured mentorship over six months. Interested individuals must apply by December 3, 2025, to participate in this transformative program.
Finally, starting in January 2026, Indiana residents can show their school spirit with a new specialty license plate from Purdue University Northwest (PNW). This initiative allows drivers to contribute to scholarships for PNW students, with a portion of the $40 registration fee directly funding student support. The plate features PNW’s colors and logo, promoting pride and investment in education.
