Transportation Secretary Proposes ‘No-Fly List’ for Senate Democrats
During a recent interview with Breitbart News, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy made headlines by joking about placing Senate Democrats on a “no-fly list” to prevent them from leaving Washington, D.C., during a government shutdown. His comments reflect frustration over potential departures while federal operations remain suspended.
Criticism of Departing Senators
In the interview, Duffy expressed his discontent with the idea of lawmakers leaving the Capitol while the government is closed. He drew from his own experiences during previous shutdowns in 2018 and 2019, stating, “We stayed here for a month. I gained 10 pounds, I think, because I ate pizza and the junkiest food.” He emphasized the strain on families during such times, noting, “Your family’s upset, your kids are annoyed.” Duffy insisted that all senators should be present and working, particularly those who voted against measures to reopen the government.
Duffy’s comments come as leaders prepare to confront another potential shutdown. He indicated that he would likely keep members of Congress at the Capitol over the weekend if Senate Democrats continue to oppose the House-passed continuing resolution. This resolution aims to fund government operations and avoid disruption.
Travel Restrictions Amid Shutdown
The ongoing shutdown has already led to reductions in air travel, affecting 40 major airports across the United States. Duffy highlighted the impact of decreased flight availability on travelers, noting, “There are staffing shortages and people who are trying to get home that can’t get home.” His remarks underscore the broader implications of the shutdown on everyday Americans.
In what seemed to be a light-hearted suggestion, Duffy endorsed the idea proposed by Matthew Boyle, the Washington Bureau Chief for Breitbart, to place senators who block government funding on a no-fly list. This remark prompted laughter during the discussion but also reflected a serious sentiment about accountability among lawmakers during critical times.
As the situation develops, Duffy’s comments serve as a reminder of the political tensions surrounding government funding and the human impact of shutdowns on both lawmakers and citizens. The call for unity and responsibility among elected officials remains a pressing theme in the ongoing debate over government operations and fiscal policy.
