Goldman Sachs MDs Share How Unlikely Passions Shape Success
Goldman Sachs has recently elevated six individuals to managing director (MD) positions, showcasing how their diverse experiences outside of finance have significantly influenced their professional journeys. The 2025 MD class, consisting of 638 new leaders, reveals that passions ranging from filmmaking to military service can foster resilience, creativity, and connection in the high-pressure environment of Wall Street.
These newly appointed MDs include a pediatric cancer survivor, a former Marine, an ex-stand-up comic, and a filmmaker. Their varied backgrounds challenge the stereotype of uniformity often associated with finance, demonstrating that life experiences beyond the office can provide valuable insights and enhance leadership skills.
Transformative Experiences Beyond the Office
Michael Brill, who leads capital formation for hybrid capital within Goldman’s asset and wealth management division, emphasizes the role of philanthropy in his life. As a pediatric cancer survivor, Brill has dedicated himself to supporting others facing similar challenges. He chairs the Board of Associates for the Ronald McDonald House New York, which offers assistance to families with children battling serious illnesses.
“My past experiences and work with the RMH-NY have shaped who I am and how I operate — not only personally, but also professionally,” Brill stated. He believes in fostering mentorship and accountability, highlighting the importance of resilience in his daily work.
Myriam Coulibaly, another newly promoted MD, draws strength from her passion for running. She notes that her experiences on the track have taught her the value of persistence. “Running has shown me that discomfort is only temporary,” she shared. This perspective helps her maintain focus and mental toughness in the demanding world of finance.
Lizzie Dove, a senior analyst in global investment research, brings her background in stand-up comedy to her role. Having performed in front of audiences, she has honed skills that translate directly to her work, such as effective communication and impactful storytelling. “Landing a joke with confidence translates into delivering a message with impact,” Dove explained, underscoring how her comedic experience enhances her professional interactions.
Creativity and Teamwork in Leadership
Joe Hall, a private wealth advisor and filmmaker, underscores the significance of storytelling in finance. His award-winning film, “The Road to Galena,” has earned accolades at international film festivals, including the Grand Prix award in Prague. Hall believes that storytelling is crucial for conveying complex financial data in a relatable manner, allowing clients to better understand their investments.
Jim Schneider, a senior semiconductor analyst with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, highlights the advantage of a multidisciplinary background. His extensive education has provided him with a unique perspective, enabling him to apply lessons from technology to finance. “Having a well-rounded educational background has been incredibly helpful in navigating career transitions,” Schneider remarked.
Bering Tsang, who served in the Marine Corps before joining Goldman as an investment banker, credits his military experience with instilling core values such as integrity and teamwork. He believes that these principles are essential for building trust with colleagues and clients. “Great teams consist of great individuals who act as if they have to shoulder more than their own weight,” Tsang stated, emphasizing the power of collective effort in achieving success.
The journeys of these six Goldman Sachs MDs illustrate that diverse experiences outside of traditional finance can significantly enrich leadership styles and enhance workplace dynamics. As they continue to navigate the complexities of Wall Street, their unique backgrounds serve as a reminder that success often stems from a blend of personal passions and professional dedication.
