Remembering Bill Plant: A Life Devoted to Family and Service
William (Bill) Plant, a devoted husband, father, and public servant, passed away in Torrance, California. He was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and dedicated much of his life to serving his community and family. Bill’s journey began in the United States Coast Guard, where he served as a radioman in various locations, including Newfoundland and the South Pacific.
A Love Story Born at the Beach
In the spring of 1962, while stationed at the Point Vicente Lighthouse, Bill and a friend ventured to Redondo Beach, where he met his future wife, Jeannine. Their connection was immediate, leading to their marriage just months later in December 1962. Their partnership flourished over the next 63 years, characterized by deep friendship and love.
While Bill was stationed on the small island of Ulithi, Jeannine took the initiative to purchase their forever home in South Redondo. This home became the backdrop for a life filled with cherished memories and family gatherings.
A Lifelong Commitment to Service
After completing eight years in the Coast Guard, Bill transitioned to a career in law enforcement, joining the Redondo Beach Police Department. He served the community for nearly 30 years, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and residents alike.
Outside of his professional life, Bill found joy in maintaining his home and nurturing a garden that attracted hummingbirds and monarch butterflies. He was an avid reader and enjoyed observing the ocean’s wildlife from the Esplanade. Yet, his greatest happiness came from spending quality time with his family, especially his beloved Jeannine.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jeannine, and their children: Nathan (Jennifer), Adam (Miki), and Sara (Sam). He is also remembered by his sister, Virginia (Richard), along with extended family and friends. A private celebration of Bill’s life will be organized at a later date.
His legacy of love, service, and dedication to family will continue to resonate with those who knew him.
