In a dramatic finish on October 28, 2023, the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers triumphed over the Penn State Nittany Lions with a thrilling 27-24 victory at University Park, Pennsylvania. The game came down to the wire as Omar Cooper Jr. made a spectacular touchdown catch from Fernando Mendoza with just 36 seconds remaining, sealing Indiana’s 10th consecutive win of the season.
On the decisive play, Mendoza demonstrated remarkable poise despite pressure from two defenders, backpedaling before delivering a pinpoint 7-yard pass to Cooper, who executed a toe-tapping catch in the back of the end zone. Penn State’s Struggles Continue
For the Penn State Nittany Lions, the loss marked their sixth consecutive defeat, dropping their record to 3-6 overall and 0-6 in conference play. This challenging season has seen the firing of head coach James Franklin and the loss of starting quarterback Drew Allar due to injury.

Ethan Grunkemeyer completed 22 of 31 passes for 219 yards, adding one touchdown and one interception. Additionally, running back Nicholas Singleton made significant contributions with 93 total yards and three touchdowns.
After trailing 20-10 early in the fourth quarter, Singleton ignited a comeback with a 59-yard run to the 1-yard line, setting up his own touchdown plunge two plays later. Following an interception by linebacker King Mack, Singleton then executed a remarkable 14-yard touchdown run to give Penn State a brief lead with just over six minutes left.
Key Performances Highlight Indiana’s Victory
Indiana’s Mendoza played a pivotal role in the win, completing 19 of 30 passes for 218 yards, along with a rushing touchdown. His performance, coupled with Charlie Becker‘s impressive receiving total of seven catches for 118 yards, proved crucial in the final moments of the game.
The Hoosiers opened the scoring late in the first quarter with Mendoza’s 18-yard touchdown scramble. Penn State responded with a 1-yard touchdown run from Singleton, tying the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. Indiana then seized control with two quick scores, including a 1-yard run by Kaelon Black, to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.
As the teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter, the stage was set for an exhilarating finish. The final moments showcased the determination of both teams, culminating in Indiana’s unforgettable last-minute touchdown that will be remembered as one of the greatest plays in the program’s history.
With this win, Indiana solidifies its position in the competitive landscape of college football, while Penn State looks to regroup and find a way to overcome its current challenges as the season progresses.
