Blue Jays Honor Dodgers’ Alex Vesia with Tribute During Game 7
UPDATE: The Toronto Blue Jays have made headlines by honoring Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia during the high-stakes Game 7 of the World Series. This heartfelt gesture comes as Vesia is away from the Dodgers due to a “deeply personal family matter,” according to a statement from the team.
In a show of solidarity, Blue Jays relievers, including Chris Bassitt, Seranthony Dominguez, Mason Fluharty, and Louis Varland, displayed Vesia’s No. 51 on the side of their caps during Friday night’s pivotal Game 6, which saw the Dodgers win 3-1 to force the decisive Game 7.
The Dodgers have been wearing Vesia’s number throughout the postseason, and now the Blue Jays’ tribute adds an emotional layer to the fierce competition. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed his gratitude, stating,
“It speaks to the brotherhood of athletes… It’s a huge, huge tribute to Alex.”
Vesia, aged 29, has been a reliable asset for the Dodgers, boasting a record of 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA across 68 regular-season games and a notable performance in the postseason.
Dodgers outfielder Enrique Hernandez shared his reaction upon noticing the tribute: “Instead of being mad that I struck out, I was kind of going back to the dugout thinking, ‘Did Bassitt play with Vesia at some point?’” Hernandez reflected on the significance of the gesture, emphasizing that it showcases the humanity in sports.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised his players for demonstrating character and compassion, stating, “We have a lot of good people… that just appreciate what we all do and the hardships that come with it.”
As the World Series reaches its climax, this tribute not only highlights the spirit of sportsmanship but also reminds fans that life transcends the game. The Blue Jays and Dodgers continue to battle for the championship, yet their mutual respect illustrates a powerful narrative of camaraderie amidst competition.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the outcome of Game 7, set to unfold in Toronto, as both teams strive for victory while honoring a fellow player in need.
