Colorado DA’s Office Launches Family Justice Center for DV Victims
UPDATE: In a groundbreaking initiative, Colorado’s 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has announced plans to launch a Family Justice Center in 2024, aimed at providing comprehensive support to victims of domestic violence. District Attorney Brian Mason emphasized the urgent need for accessible services during a recent media update.
Victims of domestic violence face numerous barriers when seeking help, making this center crucial for saving lives. Mason highlighted that the most dangerous moment for victims often occurs when they attempt to leave their abuser, with many tragic incidents occurring during this transition. “We put up countless barriers to victims and survivors of domestic violence for them to get the services they need,” Mason stated.
The Family Justice Center, set to open temporarily at the Adams County Human Services Center located at 11860 N. Pecos St. in Westminster, will offer a wide array of services under one roof, including legal assistance, counseling, housing support, crisis intervention, and safety planning. This innovative model aims to streamline access to essential resources, reducing the need for victims to navigate multiple agencies across different locations.
Currently, there is one similar center operational in the west Denver area, showcasing the effectiveness of this model. The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office has successfully partnered with various organizations to establish a Family Justice Center for Gilpin and Jefferson counties.
Mason, who has served as DA since 2021, has prioritized addressing domestic violence through the creation of specialized units that focus exclusively on related crimes. This includes the establishment of a domestic violence high-risk team that rapidly responds to cases identified as critical based on lethality assessments.
“The need to serve victims of domestic violence exists now — it existed yesterday, it existed five years ago,” Mason remarked. He underscored the importance of immediate action, stating, “There is rarely a room that you are in where someone hasn’t been impacted by domestic violence.”
As the center prepares for its opening, officials are committed to securing a permanent location to continue supporting victims. The project highlights a collective effort to confront the pervasive issue of domestic violence that transcends demographics, affecting individuals regardless of gender, language, or political affiliation.
Mason’s vision for the Family Justice Center represents a significant step toward breaking down the barriers that victims face, ensuring they receive the help they urgently need. This initiative not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also aims to foster a community-wide commitment to combating domestic violence.
As preparations continue, the community is encouraged to support this vital initiative. The Family Justice Center is set to become a beacon of hope for many in Adams County, promising to provide the critical resources and support necessary to help victims reclaim their lives.
