Gary Man Charged with Multiple Crimes After Alleged Rape Incident
UPDATE: A 43-year-old man, Corey Jones, has been charged with multiple serious offenses following an alleged rape incident in Gary, Indiana. The incident occurred on November 3, 2023, when a woman reported to police that Jones raped her in a bathroom after she refused to engage in a sex act with an older man for $10.
Police responded to a call from the victim at the Gary Housing Authority’s Al Thomas Senior High Rise, located on the 100 block of W. 11th Avenue. The woman was described as “emotionally distressed” when officers arrived. According to the police affidavit, Jones is facing two counts each of rape, criminal confinement, domestic battery, along with one count of strangulation and intimidation. He is currently held on a $12,000 cash bond.
Earlier that day, the woman and Jones had left a hotel in Merrillville to run errands. After selling a pair of shoes at Plato’s Closet, they stopped at White Castle and a liquor store for vodka. During their time together, Jones reportedly belittled the woman and threatened her life during an argument at a park. Witnesses reported that he threatened to kill her with a rock, saying, “I’ll show you how trash you are.”
The situation escalated when they entered the apartment, where an older man propositioned Jones for the woman, suggesting he would pay $10 for a sex act. The victim refused and demanded her ID and other belongings back. Jones then forced her into the bathroom, threatening her life if she did not comply.
Once inside, Jones allegedly choked her until she lost consciousness. When she regained consciousness, he was raping her. After the assault, he took her underwear, claiming he didn’t want her with his “DNA.” The woman managed to escape, throwing a drink can at Jones, and fled the apartment.
After leaving, she called the police using a bystander’s cellphone, revealing that she had been beaten by Jones multiple times before but had never reported it due to fear of his threats.
Jones was arrested later that day on the 1100 block of Broadway Avenue. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 12, 2023, before Judge Gina Jones.
This case highlights the urgent issues of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as the challenges victims face in coming forward. Authorities are urging anyone with similar experiences to seek help and report incidents to law enforcement.
