Massachusetts Faces Cold Blast and Weekend Freezing Rain Risk
UPDATE: Massachusetts is bracing for a cold and blustery Friday, with temperatures struggling to reach the mid-40s. The National Weather Service warns of a potential for freezing rain this weekend, impacting travel and outdoor plans.
As of today, temperatures across the state will hover in the mid-40s, with the Berkshires and northern Central Massachusetts barely hitting 40 degrees. Gusty winds will exacerbate the chill, making it feel colder throughout the day. In Boston, expect a high of 46 degrees and a low of 29 degrees. Meanwhile, Hyannis will see a high of 45 and a low of 31.
In the afternoon, Pittsfield may experience light rain and snow showers, with temperatures peaking at just 40 degrees. Springfield will enjoy mostly sunny skies with a high of 46 and a low of 25. Worcester will also remain mostly sunny, reaching a high of 43 and a low of 26. However, nighttime temperatures may plummet into the low and mid-20s across most of the state.
Looking ahead to Saturday, the day will begin with sunshine, but rainclouds are set to roll in during the afternoon. Precipitation is expected to begin on Saturday night, spreading eastward. Forecasters urge caution for those in higher terrain areas, as they are at risk for freezing rain when the storm hits. Fortunately, temperatures are projected to rise overnight, preventing icy conditions.
The rain is expected to taper off by Sunday morning as the cold front exits the state. Initially, temperatures may reach the 50s but are forecasted to drop into the 30s by the afternoon. Wind gusts could intensify to 40 mph by late morning, adding to the already challenging weather conditions.
Residents and travelers are advised to prepare for the cold and potential hazardous conditions this weekend. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
