Massachusetts Nurse Charged for Tampering with Oxycodone
URGENT UPDATE: A 65-year-old nurse in Massachusetts has been arrested and charged with tampering with oxycodone intended for a non-verbal hospice patient suffering from dementia. Lori Robertson was taken into custody this week following a federal indictment that reveals shocking allegations of misconduct.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts confirmed that Robertson, who was employed at a long-term care facility in Amesbury, has been charged with one count of tampering with a consumer product. This serious charge carries a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years, along with a fine of up to $250,000.
The indictment details a disturbing incident that occurred on March 31, 2023. While administering care to multiple patients, including the vulnerable dementia patient referred to as Patient 1, Robertson allegedly tampered with the prescribed oxycodone. According to authorities, she used a syringe to remove oxycodone from the medication bottle and replaced it with a household cleaner.
This reckless act has raised serious concerns regarding patient safety and the integrity of care provided at rehabilitation facilities. The oxycodone involved is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime.
“Robertson acted with reckless disregard for the risk that another person would be placed in danger of death and bodily injury,” the federal indictment states.
During her arraignment on Friday before Judge Paul Levenson, Robertson pleaded not guilty to the charges. In a significant move, federal prosecutors did not seek her detention; instead, they agreed to release her under strict conditions. These include prohibitions on drug or alcohol use, no contact with the alleged victim, and a ban on any employment that involves accessing prescription medications.
The court has scheduled an initial status conference for November 24, 2023, where further developments in the case are expected to unfold.
This incident not only highlights potential risks in healthcare facilities but also raises questions about oversight and the protection of vulnerable patients. As this case progresses, it serves as a critical reminder of the importance of ensuring safe and effective care for those in need.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story, as authorities continue to investigate and public interest grows around the safety of patients in similar care environments.
