UPDATE: The New York State Department of Health is urging residents to prepare for the upcoming flu season, with officials predicting a moderate flu season this year. Health Commissioner Jim McDonald, M.D., M.P.H., emphasized the importance of flu vaccinations and basic hygiene practices to combat the spread of illnesses.

The flu season, typically marked by an uptick in respiratory viruses, is expected to begin soon, with RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) cases often surging in October. The CDC has indicated that flu activity is likely to rise, and McDonald warns that flu seasons can be unpredictable. “If you’ve seen one flu season, you’ve seen only one flu season,” he stated, highlighting the challenges in forecasting the severity of the season.

As families begin to interact more, McDonald advises that vaccination is the best defense against the flu. “Get the flu vaccine and wash your hands regularly,” he said. Parents should also monitor their children’s health. “If your child is sick, you want to postpone playdates to protect others,” he noted.

The importance of the COVID-19 vaccine remains crucial, especially as it continues to circulate alongside the flu and RSV. McDonald also expressed hope that the new RSV vaccine could significantly reduce hospitalizations among infants, a demographic particularly vulnerable to the virus.

“RSV is one of the leading causes of infant hospital admissions,” McDonald explained. “Having a vaccine to prevent RSV in infants is a game-changing public health tool.” He cautioned against misinformation spreading online, urging the public to rely on qualified health professionals instead.

When it comes to identifying symptoms, McDonald noted that COVID, flu, and RSV often manifest similarly—starting with cough, fever, and runny nose. “The very young and the very old are the most vulnerable,” he warned, adding that difficulty breathing is a serious symptom to watch for.

As flu season approaches, the health commissioner stresses the importance of listening to your body. “If your body is speaking, we should always listen,” he advised. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables are also key strategies to support health during this season.

In the event of severe symptoms, McDonald urges individuals to consult their doctors or seek hospital care immediately. “Drink as many fluids as you can, and don’t hesitate to seek help when needed,” he concluded.

Prepare now for flu season and ensure you and your family are vaccinated to stay healthy during this challenging time.
