UPDATE: Both Niwot and Mead volleyball teams faced early exits in the state tournament held at the Denver Coliseum on November 16, 2023. Just hours ago, both teams fell in their respective first-round matches, shocking fans and players alike.

Niwot, competing in Class 5A, went up against the formidable No. 5 Rampart. Despite being the No. 12 seed, the Cougars could not capitalize on the underdog myth often seen in sports. They suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss, with set scores of 25-15, 25-19, and a brief comeback in the third set at 25-21, before ultimately losing 25-14 in the fourth. This defeat follows their surprising win over No. 17 Pueblo West, leaving them with a season record of 19-7. They are now set to face either No. 3 Rock Canyon or No. 6 Ralston Valley in the consolation round.

Meanwhile, Mead also struggled in the Class 4A tournament, where they were the No. 9 seed against No. 8 Battle Mountain. The Mavericks lost the first two sets 25-19 and 25-22. They managed to steal the third set 25-23 but ultimately fell short, losing the fourth set 25-22. The Mavericks are now 17-9 for the season and will compete against the winner of No. 2 Windsor and No. 7 Berthoud in the consolation bracket.

The emotional toll of these losses resonates deeply with the teams and their supporters. Mead’s senior leaders, Rylee Klatt and Elena Gomez, showcased exceptional talent in previous rounds, helping their team defeat Conifer and Steamboat Springs. The unexpected nature of their early tournament exit leaves fans and players questioning what could have been.

As both teams regroup, all eyes will be on their next matches. Can they bounce back and make a statement in the consolation rounds? Fans are eager for updates as the tournament progresses.

Stay tuned for more developments as the state tournament continues to unfold.
