UPDATE: Oklahoma City Fire is launching a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reuniting lost pets with their owners, just announced today. Two fire stations in the metro area are now equipped with microchip scanners to quickly identify and return pets to their families.

In a heartfelt commitment to community service, the Oklahoma City Fire Department is responding to the urgent need for pet reunification. “Pets do get loose, you know, for whatever reason, they run off a leash or escape a fence,” explained Scott Douglas of the Oklahoma City Fire Department. “It’s just something that happens. So I’m really just hoping to get the pets back to their owners a lot faster.”

The initiative allows residents to bring found pets to either Fire Station 30 at 4343 S. Lake Hefner Dr or Fire Station 25 at 2701 SW 59th St. If the animal is microchipped, firefighters can scan the chip to retrieve the owner’s information. “If you find a lost pet in the area and you’re wondering where the owner is, you can grab that pet and bring it by a fire station. If the pet is chipped, we can scan it,” Douglas added.

This new program has already demonstrated success. Recently, a good Samaritan brought a lost dog named Sue Magoo to Fire Station 30. Within minutes, firefighters scanned the microchip and located the owner, showcasing the efficiency of this initiative.

Beyond just reunifying pets, the Oklahoma City Fire Department aims to alleviate pressure on the city’s animal welfare system. Douglas stated, “The initiative behind this is to not overcrowd the animal welfare system, you know, alleviating some of the pressure off of our animal welfare system.”

Residents are encouraged to utilize this service, which is a testament to community solidarity. “It’s just, honestly, it’s just neighbors looking out for neighbors,” Douglas remarked, emphasizing the human connection in these reunions.

As more pets go missing, this service is critical to ensuring they return home safely. If you encounter a lost pet, remember to take it to one of the designated fire stations. This initiative not only aids in reuniting pets with their owners but also fosters a sense of community and responsibility among residents.

Stay tuned for more updates as this program evolves and impacts the Oklahoma City community positively. If you have a pet that goes missing, this initiative could be your best chance for a quick reunion. The Oklahoma City Fire Department is committed to making sure that no pet remains lost for long.
