Riordan Claims First WCAL Title Since 2000 with 42-35 Win
BREAKING NEWS: Archbishop Riordan has just clinched its first West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) championship since 2000 with a thrilling 42-35 victory over Serra in San Mateo. The Crusaders made a remarkable comeback after falling behind 14-0 early in the game, showcasing determination and grit that led them to an undefeated season at 10-0.
Coach Adhir Ravipati likened the intense matchup to a heavyweight boxing title fight, emphasizing the need for tactical strikes and a decisive knockout. After struggling in the first half, the Crusaders rallied to tie the game at 14 early in the second half, refusing to look back. With just 3:15 remaining, junior running back Adonyae Brown delivered the decisive blow, sprinting for a 53-yard touchdown that sealed the championship.
“It feels great,” said quarterback Michael Mitchell Jr. after the game. “It’s always nice when you know you’ve been working at something and you finally get it.” This victory is not just a title; it symbolizes a significant turnaround for Riordan football, which has steadily improved since a dismal 3-7 season in 2022.
The Crusaders’ journey back to the top has been a personal mission for Mitchell, who recalled the painful memory of a 53-7 loss to Serra two years ago that knocked them out of championship contention. “I told myself, ‘Never again on this field will I feel like this,’” Mitchell stated, highlighting the emotional stakes of the game.
Brown, who battled cramps during the match, played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring three touchdowns. His commitment to the team was unwavering, as he fought through physical challenges to deliver when it mattered most. “Because I got to come through for my team. My team needs me, and I know I need my team, so I’m gonna do whatever it takes,” he said, reflecting on his determination.
This championship win not only marks a historic achievement for Riordan but also brings closure to a painful chapter in their history. The Crusaders proved that hard work and resilience pay off, making them a force to be reckoned with in the WCAL.
As the celebrations begin, all eyes will be on Riordan as they look to build on this success and continue their winning streak in the upcoming seasons. Fans are encouraged to share their excitement and support for a team that has truly risen from the ashes.
