Thousands Gather for Urgent Dedication of Clara Luper Sit-In Plaza
UPDATE: Thousands of community members gathered in downtown Oklahoma City on November 1, 2023, for the urgent dedication of the Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza, a historic tribute to the Civil Rights Movement.
This pivotal event, held at the site of the former Katz Drug Store, commemorates the courageous actions of Clara Luper and 12 other young activists who initiated a sit-in on August 19, 1958. Their efforts led to the desegregation of Katz stores just three days later, igniting a nationwide wave of similar protests.
The newly unveiled art installation features a striking 4-ton bronze lunch counter, depicting life-sized figures of the original sit-in participants, including Luper and a Katz employee. This powerful monument serves as a reminder of the extraordinary impact ordinary individuals can achieve when they unite for justice.
During the dedication, attendees were treated to musical performances by local choirs and heartfelt remarks from key figures, including Marilyn Luper Hildreth, daughter of Clara Luper, and Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt. Hildreth emphasized the importance of this moment, stating,
“For so long, this moment in Oklahoma City has been overlooked in the history books, yet it helped change the nation.”
StudioEIS, the acclaimed sculpture firm behind the installation, invested four years in its creation. Founder Elliot Schwartz remarked,
“This project has been one of the most collaborative undertakings in our 50 years.”
The sculpture reflects the same spirit of unity that fueled the original sit-in movement.
The dedication also featured significant contributions from community members and organizations, including the American Fidelity Foundation and the Chickasaw Nation, showcasing a collaborative effort to honor this critical moment in civil rights history.
As the event concluded, guests were invited to explore the plaza and engage with the powerful sculptures, embodying the spirit of change and resilience. John Kennedy, project developer, stated,
“We are proud to recognize the courage and vision of the original 13 sit-inners and their teacher, Ms. Luper. May we never forget that we all have an opportunity to make a difference and that small actions can lead to big change.”
The Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza stands as a testament to the enduring impact of the Civil Rights Movement, ensuring that future generations will remember the bravery of those who fought for equality. This dedication is not just a celebration of the past; it is a call to action for all to continue the fight for justice and equality.
As the plaza opens to the public, the community is encouraged to visit and reflect on the legacy of those who dared to challenge the status quo. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in Oklahoma City’s journey to honor its civil rights history, inspiring ongoing dialogue and activism.
