UCF Faces Troubling 30-3 Loss at Baylor, Prepares for Houston
UPDATE: UCF suffered a 30-3 loss to Baylor in a shocking performance on Saturday, marking their seventh straight road loss. This defeat raises serious questions about the Knights’ ability to compete effectively away from home as they prepare for a crucial matchup against Houston on Friday, November 3, 2023, in the annual Space Game.
After a promising win over West Virginia just two weeks prior, UCF’s disappointing offensive output was evident as they managed only three points against a Baylor team that had struggled defensively. The Knights now hold a dismal 3-11 record in away games since the start of 2023, with their last road victory occurring on September 14 against TCU.
“We’ve got to earn one on the road,” said head coach Scott Frost. “It’s not going to be given to us and we’ve got to play a lot better than that to do that.”
UCF’s offensive woes were particularly glaring, with the team managing a mere 74 rushing yards on 23 carries against a Baylor defense that previously ranked near the bottom in rushing defense. Coach Frost noted the need for improvement, stating, “Many of our big plays in the run game have been creative plays.” Junior receiver Duane Thomas Jr. emphasized the importance of starting strong, saying, “It’s not like we’re not capable. We have the plays. We’ve just got to start fast.”
Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson delivered an impressive performance, completing 73% of his passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. UCF’s defense struggled to contain his passing attack, with edge rusher Malachi Lawrence acknowledging the Bears’ offensive capabilities. The Knights have encountered multiple dual-threat quarterbacks this season, with another on the horizon in Houston’s Conner Wegman.
Despite a challenging game, Coach Frost remains committed to quarterback Tayven Jackson, who threw for 151 yards but recorded two interceptions. “I’m ready to ride with him,” Frost stated, despite acknowledging the overall poor offensive showing. UCF’s struggles extend to special teams as well, with kicker Noe Ruelas seeing his streak of successful field goals halted at 11 after missing a 53-yard attempt.
As UCF heads into a short week of preparation for Houston, the urgency to turn around their season is palpable. The Knights must overcome their road struggles and find a way to capitalize on home field advantage against a Houston team eager to make a statement.
Stay tuned for more updates as UCF seeks to rebound from this disappointing loss and reclaim momentum in the upcoming match.
