A tragic maritime incident occurred near the Thailand-Malaysia border, resulting in hundreds of individuals reported missing after a vessel sank. On Sunday, the Malaysian maritime authority confirmed that ten survivors and one deceased person had been recovered from the waters, following the vessel’s sinking approximately three days prior. The boat had departed from Buthidaung, Myanmar, carrying around 300 passengers, primarily from the Rohingya community.

First Admiral Romli Mustafa, the director of the Malaysian maritime authority for the northern states of Kedah and Perlis, indicated that further victims may still be at sea. The search-and-rescue operation continues as authorities strive to locate the remaining individuals who were aboard the ill-fated vessel. Among the survivors found near Langkawi were three men from Myanmar, two Rohingya men, and one Bangladeshi man. The recovered body was identified as a Rohingya woman, according to local state media Bernama.

The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority group, often face severe persecution in Myanmar, where they are viewed as outsiders and are denied citizenship. Many flee their home country in search of safety and better living conditions, frequently undertaking perilous journeys across the sea.

Reports suggest that the group had initially boarded a larger vessel but were transferred to three smaller boats, each carrying approximately 100 people, as they approached the Malaysian border. This tactic was employed to evade detection by authorities. The current status of the other two boats remains unknown, and the ongoing search-and-rescue operation aims to uncover their fate.

International attention is now focused on this tragic event, highlighting the ongoing plight of the Rohingya and the dangers faced by migrants in search of refuge. The Malaysian maritime authority is coordinating efforts to locate any additional survivors and provide necessary assistance to those affected by this disaster.
