Paris Prosecutor Reveals Background of Louvre Heist Suspects
The investigation into the recent jewel heist at the Louvre Museum has uncovered significant details about the suspects involved. According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, two of the suspects were previously convicted of theft together a decade ago. This revelation comes as three alleged members of the robbery team remain in custody following their arrests.
Beccuau stated on Sunday that the DNA of a 37-year-old man, charged on Saturday, was found in the basket lift used to access the museum’s window. He now faces preliminary charges of theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. The suspect’s criminal history includes 11 prior convictions, with 10 related to theft.
In addition, a 39-year-old suspect, who received similar preliminary charges on Wednesday, has a record of 15 convictions, including two for theft. Beccuau noted that both individuals were involved in a theft case for which they were convicted in Paris in 2015.
Another suspect, a 34-year-old man, is believed to be part of what French media have termed the “commando” team. He was also charged this week. A 38-year-old woman, who is the long-time partner of the 37-year-old suspect, has been charged with complicity in the crime, indicating a close relationship among the suspects. All four individuals are currently held in custody.
Investigation Continues into Missing Jewels
Beccuau refrained from disclosing details regarding the ongoing search for the stolen jewels. She mentioned that authorities are assessing various possibilities related to the parallel market for selling the jewelry, emphasizing concerns that it could be used for money laundering or other illicit trades.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expressed optimism about the investigation’s progress during an interview with Le Parisien newspaper. He confirmed that there are four perpetrators involved, at least one of whom is still at large, along with potential individuals who ordered the crime. “I have great confidence in the work of the police, so I’m optimistic,” Nuñez stated. However, he tempered his expectations regarding the swift recovery of the stolen items, acknowledging the complexities involved.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities continue to explore all leads, hoping to bring the criminals to justice while recovering the valuable artifacts taken from one of the world’s most renowned museums.
