United Airlines Orders 141 New Boeing 787-9s for 2026 Launch

United Airlines has announced plans to enhance its long-haul fleet with the delivery of 141 new Boeing 787-9 aircraft, set to arrive in 2026. This order expands upon the existing fleet of 47 787-9s currently operated by the airline. The new aircraft will feature a redesigned interior, known as the “Elevate” configuration, that aims to improve passenger comfort across all travel classes.

The upcoming fleet includes one aircraft, designated N27997, which will have a standard interior. The remaining aircraft will introduce a premium-focused layout, boasting updated seating arrangements in all three classes: Polaris, Premium Plus, and economy. The enhanced design aims to provide a more comfortable flying experience, particularly for business travelers. United plans to launch these aircraft in early 2026, establishing new routes and enhancing existing services.

Details on the New Aircraft Configuration

United Airlines has accumulated a total of 71 Boeing 787 planes in previous orders, comprising 12 787-8s, 38 787-9s, and 21 787-10s. In 2022, the airline placed an additional order for 100 787s, along with options for 100 more, exercising 50 of those options in 2023. While the exact breakdown of variants for the new deliveries has not been specified, United has consistently received 787-9s, which will continue as the primary variant for upcoming deliveries.

The new 787-9 aircraft will be referred to as “78L,” featuring a cabin layout that includes 64 Polaris suites, 35 Premium Plus seats, and 123 economy seats. This configuration represents the most premium-heavy layout among US-registered widebody aircraft. Notably, the economy seats will be equipped with a large 13-inch 4K OLED screen, the largest in the United States, and will include Bluetooth capability and six power outlets per row.

Impact on United’s Long-Haul Operations

The introduction of the 78L configuration is expected to significantly enhance United’s capacity for premium travel. The airline’s initial routes for these aircraft will include flights from San Francisco to Singapore and London-Heathrow.
