The Madison County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 18, 2023, to celebrate the opening of Purchase for a Purpose, a new retail establishment located on Highway 00 in the former bowling alley building. The store, which opened its doors on November 6, aims to provide quality items at discounted prices while offering employment opportunities to individuals with varying abilities. Currently, the business employs between eight to ten staff members, contributing to their overall quality of life.

Chris Reagan, the founder of Purchase for a Purpose, welcomed attendees and explained the mission of the business during the tour. The event attracted notable guests, including Missouri State Representative Dale Wright from the 116th District, Missouri State Representative Tony Harbison from the 144th District, and Jody Williams from U.S. Congressman Jason Smith’s office.

Tour of Local Facilities Highlights Community Needs

Following the ribbon cutting, Reagan guided the representatives to several local facilities, including the Fredericktown Senior Center, Madison County Workshop, Wagner Residential Care, and Madison County Recovery Allies. At each stop, they received insights into the unique challenges these organizations face.

At the Fredericktown Senior Center, Crystal Sherrick, Director of the center, provided an overview of their operations amidst a budget deficit. She noted that the cost per meal is $9.23, while they receive only $6.00 per meal from funding sources. Local businesses have temporarily supported the center, allowing it to remain open while they seek a permanent solution. During the tour, Santa Claus made a special appearance, delighting the seniors with festive cheer.

The group then visited the Madison County Workshop, where Debby Boone showcased the thriving business model. Boone and her colleague, Diana McDaniel, have transformed the workshop and thrift store into a well-organized space that fosters community spirit among its employees. Their efforts have created distinct categories for merchandise, enhancing the shopping experience.

At Wagner Residential Care, owner Teena Wagner welcomed the representatives and guided them through the 40-bed facility. Residents were excited to meet the visitors ahead of their Christmas party scheduled for that evening. Wagner shared both the successes and concerns she faces in running the care home, emphasizing the importance of community support.

The final stop was at Madison County Recovery Allies, where Executive Director Karen Moser and Outreach Director Karen Whitener engaged with the group. They highlighted the positive outcomes since the facility opened three years ago, including a notable decrease in overdose cases at the local emergency room. Discussions also focused on the funding sources, particularly the Opioid Crisis Funds allocated to the county that have been instrumental in supporting their mission. Despite progress, Moser stressed the need for additional funding to continue their work in helping families reunite and thrive.

Each facility visited during the tour shares a common goal: to enhance the lives of the people they serve. The representatives gained firsthand insight into the dedication and compassion of those working in Madison County, underscoring the community’s commitment to supporting its members in need.
