Latter-day Saint Leader Jeffrey R. Holland Passes Away at 85
President Jeffrey R. Holland, a distinguished scholar and prominent leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died on December 27, 2025, at 03:15 a.m. He was 85 years old. Holland’s death marks the end of a remarkable journey that began in St. George, Utah, and spanned decades of dedication to education, faith, and service.
For 31 years, Holland served as an apostle, and in his final months, he held the position of president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. His tenure included a profound moment of personal revival after a near-fatal health scare in 2023, which he described as a divine mercy. “The miracle that I represent with the restoration of my life is as real as any miracle in the Old Testament or the New Testament,” he remarked during his first international trip after recovery.
A Legacy of Leadership and Hope
As the president of Brigham Young University from 1980 to 1989, Holland became known for his optimistic leadership, which profoundly impacted countless students. His ability to communicate effectively, combined with his deep faith in Jesus Christ, made him an influential figure within the church. Following his calling as an apostle in 1994, Holland’s reach expanded to millions, as he sought to inspire hope and faith among believers.
Holland often referenced his lineage, noting that his 10th great-grandfather, Roger Williams, was a champion of religious liberty who anticipated the return of new apostles. In his book, “Broken Things to Mend,” he expressed a desire to one day inform Williams that his descendants had indeed witnessed the rise of new apostles.
The passing of President Holland creates two vacancies within the Church leadership. Church President Dallin H. Oaks is expected to designate Henry B. Eyring, the first counselor in the First Presidency, as the new president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, while Dieter F. Uchtdorf will assume the role of acting president.
A Passionate Educator and Orator
Holland was celebrated for his eloquence and warmth, earning him the title of “pastoral genius” from Rev. Andrew Teal, an Oxford theologian. His engaging oratorical style, bolstered by his education at Yale University, resonated deeply with audiences, both in the church and beyond. He delivered 64 addresses at international general conferences, where he consistently emphasized the importance of faith and the teachings of the Book of Mormon.
Throughout his life, Holland remained a staunch advocate for the Book of Mormon, claiming to have read it over 100 times. He described it as “the most profound book in my life,” and its teachings served as a foundation for his faith and ministry.
President Holland faced personal challenges, including health issues and the loss of his wife, Patricia, in July 2023. He openly shared his struggles with mental health, encouraging members to seek both spiritual and professional help during difficult times. “If you had appendicitis, God would expect you to seek a priesthood blessing and get the best medical care available. So too with emotional disorders,” he advised.
Holland’s legacy will continue to influence future generations, as he inspired church members to hold fast to their faith and hope amid life’s challenges. His teachings and personal experiences, particularly his emphasis on the importance of the covenant path, will remain integral to the church’s mission.
As the church prepares to fill the leadership vacancies left by Holland’s passing, his contributions to education, faith, and community service will be remembered and celebrated by many across the globe.
