UPDATE: Alumni from Skyline High School in Oakland gathered urgently on Saturday afternoon to honor the late Coach John Beam with a special screening of the award-winning documentary series, “Last Chance U.” This heartfelt tribute, marked by emotional reflections, took place just weeks after Beam’s tragic passing in November.

The viewing party served not only as a celebration of Beam’s legacy but also as a fundraiser for a teacher appreciation grant aimed at supporting current educators. Organizer Charles Lassey, a member of the Class of 2000, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “It took Coach Beam getting taken away from us to say, ‘Hey. We need to do something.’

Members of the Class of 2000 brought together generations of former students to pay their respects. Christina Macalino, another 2000 graduate, fondly remembered Beam’s iconic mustache, saying, “He always had that mustache!” She reflected on Beam’s tough love approach as a P.E. teacher, which she believes helped students excel. “He was supportive, inspiring. He believed in the Oakland community.

Coach Beam dedicated over 45 years to teaching and coaching in Oakland, influencing countless lives at Skyline High and later at Laney College. He mentored over 20 athletes who transitioned to the NFL. Beam was fatally shot at Laney College, reportedly by a former student, in a targeted attack that shocked the community.

Alumni expressed the profound impact Beam had on their lives. Mark Stauffer, a Class of 1978 graduate, recalled Beam as a father figure who uplifted students. “He took guys out of the gutter and turned them into Pro-Bowlers.

Younger alumni like Eric Romero, Class of 2017, joined the gathering to show solidarity for a man who always supported Oakland’s youth. “He saw them for what they were as a person. He just wanted to make sure they were taken care of.

The event resonated deeply, showcasing the community’s enduring love and respect for Coach John Beam. As tributes continue to pour in, the legacy of this beloved coach remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations.

The Skyline High School community is now focusing on what’s next, with intentions to create more initiatives to honor Beam’s commitment to education and mentorship. The spirit of Coach Beam lives on through those he touched, igniting a collective resolve to continue his mission of supporting and uplifting the youth of Oakland.
