Judge Orders DOJ to Release Grand Jury Transcripts in Comey Case
URGENT UPDATE: U.S. District Court Judge Cameron McGowan Currie has ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide complete grand jury transcripts related to the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey. The judge’s demand comes after the DOJ failed to include critical statements made by interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, intensifying scrutiny over the indictment process.
In a stunning development, Judge Currie issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the DOJ on Tuesday, insisting on a comprehensive transcript that includes Halligan’s remarks. This unprecedented move follows Comey’s claim that Halligan’s appointment as U.S. Attorney was invalid, raising questions about the legitimacy of the indictment.
“This court finds the transcript fails to include remarks made by the indictment signer both before and after the testimony,” Judge Currie stated, emphasizing that the missing information is crucial for assessing Halligan’s involvement in the grand jury proceedings.
Last month, Currie first demanded the transcripts to investigate the validity of Halligan’s role in the case. However, the DOJ’s recent submission omitted Halligan’s comments entirely, prompting the judge’s urgent request for a complete record.
Legal experts are sounding alarms over this unusual demand. Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance remarked,
“It’s never good news for the government when a court pushes for disclosure of a prosecutor’s comments in the grand jury.”
The implications of this development are significant. If the transcripts reveal inconsistencies or omissions in the indictment process, it could lead to a potential dismissal of the charges against Comey.
As this situation unfolds, all eyes are on the DOJ to comply with the court’s order swiftly. The next steps could dramatically impact the trajectory of this high-profile case, which has already captured national attention.
