Rams Evaluate Kicking Game Following Missed Opportunities
The Los Angeles Rams are reassessing their kicking game after a challenging performance in their recent 34-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints on October 29, 2023. Head coach Sean McVay acknowledged ongoing concerns about kicker Joshua Karty, who missed a critical 39-yard field goal and three extra point attempts this season.
Despite expressing confidence in Karty, McVay did not rule out the possibility of bringing in another kicker for evaluation. “There’s a lot of things that we’re going to look into,” McVay said during a press conference on Monday. He emphasized that the Rams (6-2) would focus on evaluating their entire kicking operation to address issues that have contributed to both of their losses this season.
McVay detailed that the evaluation would encompass several aspects of the kicking game, including the snap from Alex Ward, the hold from punter Ethan Evans, the timing and rhythm of Karty’s kicks, and the protection from the offensive line. Protection issues were evident when Karty’s kick was disrupted by a rusher who came in untouched from the right side, prompting Karty to adjust his kick to avoid a potential block.
“There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into this,” McVay noted, highlighting the roles of special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn and assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica. “I’ve been pleased with their responses and the improvements in protection and timing,” he added, indicating a collaborative effort to rectify ongoing issues.
This is not the first time McVay has faced challenges with special teams during his tenure with the Rams. He acknowledged that in the past, he has placed the field goal unit in difficult situations with long-range attempts. However, this season, Karty’s struggles have largely occurred from within 50 yards, with three of his five missed attempts coming from under 40 yards.
“Patience and providing real feedback are critical for moving forward,” McVay explained. “All we can do is control how we move forward.”
In addition to the kicking game, the Rams are monitoring the health of wide receiver Puka Nacua, who left the game against the Saints with rib injuries. McVay stated that Nacua was scheduled for a scan on Monday and expressed cautious optimism about the outcome. Nacua sustained the injury during a jet sweep play, and although he was cleared to return, the Rams opted for caution given their lead in the game.
“I feel sick about putting him in that position,” McVay admitted. “There are always occupational hazards in this game, and as a coach, you have to evaluate those decisions carefully.”
As the Rams continue their preparations for upcoming games, the focus will remain on addressing their kicking game issues and ensuring the health of their key players. McVay’s commitment to evaluating all options underscores the importance of special teams in the team’s overall success this season.
