Gabe Morgan Wins Newport News Sheriff Race, Secures 5th Term
UPDATE: In a decisive election held on November 7, 2023, Newport News voters have confirmed their support for incumbent sheriff Gabe Morgan, who has won his fifth consecutive term with a commanding 72% of the vote. Morgan faced independent challenger Francis Jacobson, a former deputy sheriff, but ultimately triumphed, solidifying his leadership for another four years.
As the clock struck 10:01 p.m., unofficial results revealed Morgan’s overwhelming victory, demonstrating the community’s trust in his commitment to public safety. Celebrating at Cozzy’s Comedy Club, Morgan expressed gratitude to voters, stating, “I do this not because I have to. I do this because I love what I do.”
In addition to the sheriff’s race, Newport News voters made critical decisions about other city positions. Shannon Jones, a Democrat, has been elected as the new Commonwealth’s Attorney, having run unopposed. Jones previously served as assistant city attorney and won the Democratic primary against long-time incumbent Howard Gwynn earlier this year.
In the treasurer race, Democrat Sanu Dieng-Cooper defeated independent candidate Justin Kennedy, securing over 59% of the votes. Dieng-Cooper emphasized her commitment to modernizing financial operations and enhancing financial literacy among residents.
Incumbent Tiffany Boyle was also reaffirmed in her role as Commissioner of Revenue, running unopposed to continue her responsibilities since 2018. Her office manages crucial functions such as business licenses and state income tax returns.
These election results reflect a significant moment for Newport News, as voters chose stability and continuity in leadership. The community’s engagement in the democratic process underscores the importance of local governance.
WHAT’S NEXT: Residents will be looking for immediate action from their elected officials as Morgan and his colleagues take office. With critical priorities set, including public safety, financial modernization, and community engagement, the newly elected officials aim to make a tangible impact in Newport News.
This election marks a pivotal point for Newport News, with the community’s voice resonating clearly through the ballot box. As these leaders step into their roles, the focus is on delivering results that matter to the citizens who elected them.
