Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Shine at 2025 CFDA Fashion Awards
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made a rare joint appearance at the 2025 CFDA Fashion Awards held on March 6, 2025, in New York City. The renowned designers, known for their preference for privacy, attended the event without walking the red carpet. They arrived at the American Museum of Natural History donning matching black coats from their label, The Row, and took home the prestigious American Accessory Designer of the Year award.
The sisters have consistently earned accolades at the CFDA Fashion Awards over the past decade. At this year’s event, Ashley wore a striking $5,500 Erdene tuxedo-style coat featuring a satin shawl collar, while Mary-Kate chose a similarly styled coat with structured shoulders. Both kept their ensembles simple underneath, with Mary-Kate opting for white and Ashley in black. Their outfits were complemented by exquisite vintage pieces from Cartier: Ashley paired her look with a 1928 Art Deco jadeite and diamond brooch valued at approximately $65,000, while Mary-Kate wore a 1938 citrine and diamond necklace that previously auctioned at $338,000.
Upon accepting their award, Mary-Kate expressed heartfelt gratitude. “To our amazing customers who truly give us the opportunity to do what we love, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you,” she stated. She also acknowledged their support network, saying, “To our friends and family – without your support, we would not be here today. You’ve been our guiding light over the past 20 years.”
The Olsen twins began their careers in the entertainment industry at just nine months old. They transitioned from Hollywood to New York City at the age of 18 to pursue their education at New York University. Ashley reflected on this pivotal moment in an interview with i-D in 2021, stating, “We were 18 years old and I think what we did know was that we wanted to take that time to take a break from what we were previously doing and to explore things that interested us.”
They founded The Row in 2006, which has since garnered significant acclaim. Despite their success, the sisters have maintained a low profile, choosing to live discreetly. Mary-Kate emphasized their preference for privacy when she stated, “We’re discreet people – that’s how we were raised.” She described both herself and Ashley as “perfectionists,” committed to producing high-quality fashion that meets their standards.
Mary-Kate elaborated on their approach to fashion, explaining, “I think the reason we do fashion is to constantly try to fix our imperfections. And you have next season to do that. But it’s also our job to find every imperfection in there to make sure that we’re constantly pushing ourselves and training our eyes.”
Outside their professional endeavors, both sisters have taken significant steps in their personal lives. In 2023, Ashley welcomed her first child, a son named Otto, with artist Louis Eisner. The couple has kept their family life private, adhering to their preference for discretion. Meanwhile, Mary-Kate finalized her divorce from Olivier Sarkozy in 2021 and has focused on her career, primarily residing in New York.
Mary-Kate sparked speculation about a romantic relationship with retired NHL player Sean Avery in 2024. However, Avery clarified the nature of their relationship in August 2024, stating, “We’ve been friends for 20 years. That’s a long-term relationship. We were, like, kids in New York growing up together.”
Overall, the Olsen twins continue to blend their passion for fashion with a strong commitment to maintaining their privacy, proving their enduring influence in the industry while staying true to their personal values.
