URGENT UPDATE: As the federal government shutdown halts SNAP benefits for thousands of families in Oklahoma City, local restaurants are stepping up to provide essential support by offering free meals to those in need. This initiative comes as families struggle to feed their children with benefits cut off since the beginning of October 2023.

At Taquitos Feliz, located at NW 23rd Street and MacArthur Blvd., owner Roberto Brambila reports a significant surge in customers. “I’m pretty sure it was well over 100 people,” he stated. However, the increase in business isn’t translating into profit. “No, not in this case,” Brambila added, highlighting the financial strain of this charitable effort.

Recognizing the plight of parents reliant on SNAP, Brambila decided to give away complete meals to anyone who walks in with at least one child and a valid EBT card. “They can get tacos, burritos, or quesadillas—whatever they prefer,” he explained. Despite the cost, Brambila emphasizes the importance of helping his community. “I love helping people out. That’s—I mean, that’s what I love to do,” he said.

The generous spirit is echoed by local resident Gil Torres, who, noticing the restaurant’s compassion, wished to contribute. After a brief visit to an ATM, Torres returned to Taquitos Feliz with a stack of cash, expressing his gratitude to Brambila: “Thank you for what you’re doing.”

In a powerful moment, Torres remarked, “This isn’t a time to be political. It’s a time to be human. And let’s help our fellow humans out.” This sentiment resonates deeply as families face uncertainty during the shutdown.

Additionally, Taco Casa locations across the metro are also offering free meals for children whose families present an EBT card at the register. Meanwhile, Oliver’s Pizzeria will give away free large one-topping pizzas to anyone showing a valid SNAP or EBT card this coming Monday, October 9, 2023, from 2 to 6 p.m.

As the shutdown continues, these local initiatives highlight the resilience and kindness of the Oklahoma City community, providing a crucial lifeline to families in distress. Residents are encouraged to share this information widely to ensure those in need can access these generous offers.

Stay tuned for further updates on how communities are responding to the ongoing challenges posed by the government shutdown.
