Runnin’ Utes Dominate Holy Cross with 18-Point Win
The University of Utah’s Runnin’ Utes achieved a decisive victory over Holy Cross, winning 87-69 on March 15, 2025, at the Huntsman Center. This game marked Utah’s third match in just seven days, and the team’s performance showcased their athleticism and depth, improving their season record to 3-0.
Utah’s coach, Alex Jensen, expressed satisfaction with the team’s rebounding efforts, emphasizing that it had been a key focus following their previous games. “Pleased with the rebounding. That was a point of emphasis the last two games. We did a good job tonight out-rebounding them in both halves,” Jensen remarked. He noted that every player who participated contributed an assist, enhancing the team’s overall performance.
Game Recap: Utes Establish Control Early
The game began with a competitive spirit, as both teams exchanged baskets during the opening seven minutes. A sequence of five consecutive points from Kendyl Sanders—including a three-pointer and a dramatic drive to the basket—allowed Utah to create a slight advantage at 15-10. The Utes subsequently embarked on a 7-0 scoring run, extending their lead to 27-17, which prompted Holy Cross to call a timeout.
Utah established their dominance further, leading by as many as 15 points in the first half and heading into halftime with a score of 48-34. The Utes out-rebounded Holy Cross 21-12 in the opening half and shot an impressive 58.8%, primarily by executing a strategy that prioritized driving to the basket.
In the second half, Holy Cross attempted to mount a comeback, starting with a 7-0 run that narrowed the margin to just six points following a three-pointer from Joe Nugent. Utah quickly responded, maintaining their double-digit lead, and ultimately secured the win with a 7-0 run of their own late in the game.
Offensive Highlights and Team Contributions
Utah’s offensive strategy paid off, particularly in their ability to penetrate the paint, where they scored 44 points, accounting for over half of their total points. The first half was particularly productive, with 28 of the 48 points coming from inside. Veteran players such as Terrence Brown led the way with 21 points, while Keanu Dawes added 14 points and nearly achieved a triple-double with nine rebounds. Freshman Obomate Abbey also made a notable impact, scoring a career-high 10 points.
The Utes displayed strong ball movement, finishing the contest with 15 assists and a mere six turnovers. All eight players who participated recorded assists, highlighting the team’s commitment to sharing the ball effectively.
Defensively, Utah showed improvement from their previous games, particularly in rebounding, where they achieved a 33-23 advantage. “It was a big emphasis this week; we knew we didn’t rebound too well against Weber State,” said Josh Hayes, who contributed nine points.
Still, some defensive lapses allowed Holy Cross to remain competitive at times. The Crusaders shot 44.4% in the first half, with Nugent leading their scoring efforts and finishing with 15 points, including five three-pointers.
As the season progresses, Utah is expected to regain the services of fifth-year forward James Okonkwo in their next match, which could further bolster their performance.
In conclusion, this victory not only reflects the Utes’ capability to perform under pressure but is also a significant step in building a resilient team culture. With a home game against Sam Houston scheduled next, the Utes aim to extend their unbeaten streak to 4-0. “It’s a good one for us, definitely a confidence builder,” said Seydou Traore, looking forward to maintaining momentum as the season unfolds.
