Democrats Criticize Centrists for Supporting Shutdown Legislation

Democratic leaders are expressing strong dissatisfaction with some members of their party after a coalition of centrists voted to support legislation aimed at ending the ongoing government shutdown in the United States. On Sunday night, the Senate approved the procedural vote with a tally of 60 to 40, a step that suggests a resolution may soon be reached after the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

The coalition, comprising eight Democratic senators and led by Dick Durbin of Illinois and Tim Kaine of Virginia, aligned with a Republican proposal that fails to extend critical subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. This agreement is set to be put to a formal vote next month, though many anticipate it will not pass.

The backlash from progressive members of the party was swift. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York criticized her colleagues, asserting that Democrats had failed to “hold the line.” In a post on X, she emphasized the need for leadership that stands by its commitments, stating, “Working people want leaders whose word means something.”

Other prominent Democrats expressed similar sentiments. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker labeled the deal an “empty promise” and urged his party to advocate for affordable health care. California Governor Gavin Newsom was more blunt in his assessment, calling the decision “pathetic.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York stated that the legislation does not serve the needs of “tens of millions of everyday Americans,” adding, “America is far too expensive. We will not support spending legislation advanced by Senate Republicans that fails to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits.”

Further criticism came from Representative Ro Khanna of California, who specifically targeted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. Khanna urged for Schumer’s replacement, questioning his effectiveness: “If you can’t lead the fight to stop health care premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?”

New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill characterized the Democratic leadership as failing to represent the interests of the populace, calling the deal “malpractice.” She remarked, “The Senate is on the brink of caving on a bill that the American people cannot afford.”

In defense of the coalition’s actions, Tim Kaine argued that Republican senators had a responsibility to support the bill, as their constituents would expect them to do so. Durbin echoed this sentiment, asserting that the legislation, while not perfect, would mitigate the negative impacts of the shutdown, which has resulted in layoffs and cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont disagreed with the coalition’s approach, describing the night as “a very bad night” for the Democratic Party. The final passage of the legislation may still be several days away, as Democrats could delay the process.

Former President Donald Trump has not yet commented on his support for the bill but indicated at the White House on Sunday that a resolution might be near, stating, “It looks like we’re getting close to the shutdown ending.”

The outcome of this legislative effort remains critical, as it affects millions of Americans reliant on government services and healthcare programs.
