BREAKING: A federal indictment has been issued against Dana Williamson, former chief of staff to California Governor Gavin Newsom, for allegedly stealing $225,000 from former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. This urgent development comes as authorities reveal a scheme involving several high-profile political aides, including Sean McCluskie and lobbyist Greg Campbell, who are implicated in the fraud.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of California, the group is accused of conspiring to divert campaign funds under false pretenses, purportedly to pay McCluskie’s wife for account oversight that never occurred. The payments, which amounted to $10,000 monthly from late 2022 until fall 2024, totalled $225,000.

Williamson also allegedly submitted false tax returns, claiming over $1 million in business deductions for personal expenses such as luxury hotel stays, designer handbags, and private jet travel, alongside fictitious jobs for friends and family. If convicted, she faces severe penalties: up to 20 years in prison for each fraud count, and significant fines.

In a statement, Becerra expressed shock at the allegations, calling it a “gut punch” from a “trusted advisor.” He confirmed his cooperation with the investigation, underscoring the importance of a thorough legal process.

Newsom’s spokesperson, Izzy Gardon, stated that Williamson is no longer employed by the governor’s office. “The Governor expects all public servants to uphold the highest standards of integrity,” Gardon emphasized, reminding the public of the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”

This indictment marks a significant moment in California politics, as it brings to light serious allegations against individuals who were once trusted political operatives. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the legal proceedings that follow.

Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent story as the investigation unfolds.
