Oregon Ducks Break Three-Point Record in Thrilling Win Over SDSU
UPDATE: The Oregon Ducks achieved a historic milestone by attempting a program-record 40 three-pointers in a thrilling 83-69 victory over South Dakota State on November 15, 2023. This dramatic turnaround comes after a dismal start to the season, where they were ranked 351st nationally in three-point shooting, connecting on just 20.5% of their attempts.
The Ducks, playing in front of 5,019 fans at Matthew Knight Arena, saw seven players contribute from beyond the arc, with standout performances from Jackson Shelstad and Takai Simpkins. Shelstad scored 22 points and provided eight assists, while Simpkins added 20 points, including five three-pointers from 11 attempts.
This new record surpasses the previous program high of 39 attempts set during the 2017-18 season. Shelstad remarked on the team’s struggle with perimeter shooting, stating, “We were getting good looks… we finally started hitting them.” However, he acknowledged the need for improvement, emphasizing that the team must focus on attacking the paint more effectively.
Despite the record-setting attempts, head coach Dana Altman expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s shot selection. “That’s not us,” he said, criticizing the lack of physicality and the quick attempts taken without proper rebounding positions. Altman noted that teams would exploit Oregon’s prior shooting struggles by packing the paint, making it crucial for the Ducks to diversify their offensive strategy moving forward.
Oregon’s dominance was highlighted by their ability to maintain control throughout the game, leading for the final 33 minutes after a strong start. They scored 14 of their 18 points in the first half from inside the paint, largely due to offensive rebounds, despite launching 23 three-point attempts in the opening period.
The Jackrabbits made a late surge, narrowing the gap to 61-60 with just over 8 minutes remaining. However, Oregon quickly regained momentum with three consecutive three-pointers from Shelstad, Kwame Evans Jr., and Simpkins, effectively sealing the victory with a 13-5 run in the closing minutes.
As Oregon prepares for their next matchup against Oregon State, Altman anticipates the return of injured player Devon Pryor, which could further bolster the Ducks’ lineup.
The Ducks now stand at 3-0 for the season, and as they move forward, they must improve their shot selection and reinforce their physical play to compete against tougher opponents. The urgency for improvement is clear, as they aim to build on this pivotal performance while addressing critical areas of their game.
Stay tuned for more updates as Oregon continues its season.
