Christopher Newport Completes Historic 10-0 Season with 27-7 Win
BREAKING: Christopher Newport University (CNU) has made history by finishing its football regular season with a perfect 10-0 record after a decisive 27-7 victory over The College of New Jersey on Friday night in Ewing. This marks the first unbeaten regular season in the program’s history, which began in 2001.
The Captains were led by standout performances from Colin Hart, who caught seven passes for 101 yards, becoming the all-time receptions leader for CNU. Quarterback Connor Barry, a candidate for All-American honors, showcased his skills by completing 18 of 26 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He also contributed with a rushing touchdown, further solidifying his impact on the game.
Coach Paul Crowley’s squad, ranked 7th by d3football.com, continues their impressive streak with 15 consecutive wins dating back to last season. The Captains dominated the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a 7-0 record and are now eagerly awaiting the announcement of the NCAA playoff bracket, set to be revealed at 5 p.m. on Sunday via NCAA.com.
The game began slowly, but CNU broke the deadlock with a 2-yard touchdown run by Zavier Kennedy with 7:20 left in the second quarter, capping an impressive 88-yard drive. Following a defensive stand that forced a three-and-out, Barry connected with Josh Powell for an 11-yard touchdown pass, giving CNU a 14-0 lead at halftime.
CNU’s momentum continued into the third quarter with Barry’s 2-yard rushing touchdown on their first possession, extending the lead to 21-0. The College of New Jersey’s Joe Visaggio gave the Lions a glimmer of hope with a 17-yard touchdown run with 10:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, capping a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
However, Barry sealed the game with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Gunner White less than two minutes before the final whistle, finalizing the score at 27-7.
As CNU prepares for the playoffs, anticipation builds among fans and players alike. With a likely first-round bye and the potential for a home game in the round of 32, the Captains are poised for a significant postseason run. Stay tuned for updates as the playoff field is announced.
