Richard Gere Shares Urgent Parenting Wisdom from Dalai Lama
UPDATE: Richard Gere, the acclaimed actor known for his role in “Pretty Woman,” has revealed that the most crucial parenting lesson he wishes to impart to his children comes directly from the Dalai Lama. In a recent interview with People magazine published on Saturday, Gere emphasized the importance of kindness, stating, “You show kindness. That’s the best thing you can do.”
The 76-year-old actor, who has been a practicing Buddhist since 1978, drew inspiration from a profound conversation between friends and the Dalai Lama. “Many years ago, a friend of mine, a couple, asked His Holiness how to raise a child,” Gere recounted. “He advised them to teach their child to be kind to insects, a lesson that carries over into all of life.” This poignant message underscores the significance of empathy and respect for all living beings.
Gere is a father of three sons: one with ex-wife Carey Lowell and two with current wife Alejandra Silva. The actor’s commitment to instilling values of kindness reflects his deep-rooted spiritual journey, which began in his 20s as he searched for purpose and meaning in life. “I think a lot of people in their 20s go through that,” he shared, as he sought answers to life’s big questions.
In October 2024, Gere produced a documentary titled “Wisdom of Happiness,” showcasing the Dalai Lama’s teachings, which premiered at the Zurich Film Festival. His enduring friendship with the spiritual leader, Tenzin Gyatso, has shaped his outlook on life and parenting.
Gere’s insights have resonated with many, as he continues to advocate for compassion and understanding in a world that often overlooks the importance of kindness. Reflecting on his first meeting with the Dalai Lama in the foothills of the Himalayas, Gere described the spiritual leader as “completely simple and direct and honest,” likening the experience to speaking with a beloved family member or inspiring mentor.
As parents and caregivers seek guidance in nurturing the next generation, Gere’s heartfelt advice serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of kindness in our lives. The actor’s message is clear: teaching our children to show compassion can lead to a more empathetic and understanding world.
What happens next? As Gere continues to share his parenting philosophy, many will be eager to see how his approach influences both his family and the broader conversation about raising compassionate children. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring story.
