Military Leadership Shapes Amazon Career for Veteran Manager
Former Marine Corps drill instructor Humphrey has successfully transitioned to a leadership role at Amazon, leveraging his military training to navigate corporate challenges. His experience has not only influenced his career trajectory but has also provided a framework for supporting fellow veterans as they adapt to civilian work life.
Military Experience as a Foundation for Leadership
After 17 years in the United States Marine Corps, Humphrey joined Amazon in 2017, unaware of how profoundly his military background would impact his new career. He attributes his leadership style to the values of “firmness, fairness, dignity, and compassion” learned during his service. This approach has proven crucial as he transitioned from an inventory associate to an area manager overseeing dozens of employees.
Throughout his military career, Humphrey held significant responsibilities early on, becoming a section chief at just 19 years old. He managed a team of Marines, ensuring their safety and well-being while handling complex tasks such as maintaining equipment and managing artillery. This early exposure to leadership instilled a sense of responsibility and calmness under pressure, qualities that have been essential in his Amazon roles.
Amazon’s Commitment to Veterans
Amazon has made substantial investments in employee welfare, including over $1 billion to raise pay and reduce healthcare costs for its fulfillment and transportation workers. Currently, the average total compensation for these employees exceeds $30 per hour with benefits. In 2021, Amazon pledged to hire 100,000 veterans and military spouses worldwide by 2024, a goal that was surpassed early in January 2024.
Humphrey utilizes his military experience to assist new associates in navigating Amazon’s corporate environment. As a leader of the employee network Warriors at Amazon, he provides mentorship and guidance, helping veterans acclimate to their roles. He often reassures them that their military experiences are valuable and relevant to their success at Amazon.
His proactive leadership style was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he was called to fill a new role on short notice. He swiftly implemented safety measures to protect associates, ensuring operations continued smoothly while maintaining a supportive atmosphere.
“People often ask me, ‘How are you so calm when everything else is crazy?’ This quality comes directly from my military experience,” Humphrey explains. Drawing on lessons learned from effective military leaders, he emphasizes the importance of clear communication and realistic expectations during challenging times.
Fostering Future Leaders
Humphrey’s leadership philosophy prioritizes the growth and development of his team members. He encourages them to “know your job and the job of two people above you,” reflecting a military practice of training replacements to ensure smooth transitions in leadership. This strategy is vital in both military and corporate settings, where teams must adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
At the Texas fulfillment center where he works, many former military personnel hold leadership positions, fostering a culture that values responsibility, training, and teamwork. He advocates for taking advantage of Amazon’s educational benefits and flexible scheduling options to create pathways for career advancement.
Through his involvement with Warriors at Amazon, Humphrey helps fellow veterans integrate into the corporate culture. He acts as a resource for new associates, offering a supportive environment where they can discuss concerns and seek guidance. “I provide them with a second leader to chat with if they have questions or concerns,” he says, reinforcing the importance of mentorship.
As Humphrey continues his journey at Amazon, he remains dedicated to helping others navigate their leadership paths. His story exemplifies how diverse experiences, particularly those from military backgrounds, can enhance workplace dynamics and contribute to a thriving corporate culture.
Amazon’s commitment to fostering growth and inclusivity ensures that all employees, including those transitioning from military service, find a place where their unique skills and perspectives are valued.
