Following the Christmas holiday, the shopping season continues to thrive in the Fox Valley area as consumers flock to malls and shopping centers in search of post-holiday sales. On December 26, 2025, many shoppers took advantage of gift cards and cash received during the festivities to explore new purchases.

In St. Charles, Michael Shake from West Chicago was among those eager to shop. He visited a Target store with his wife, Jenna, and their daughter, Ellie, who expressed a desire to buy a safety mask to accompany her Nerf guns. “We’re here so my daughter can spend her Christmas cash,” Shake stated, highlighting the common practice of using gift money for personal purchases.

Retailers Anticipate Post-Holiday Rush

Retailers recognize the week after Christmas as a crucial time for sales. According to Kristina Arias, senior director of marketing at Fox Valley Mall, “shopping shifts from urgency to choice” during this period. She explained, “There’s a pre-Christmas and a post-Christmas push. They’re both similar, but really do the same in terms of getting rid of the inventory.”

Arias noted that shoppers tend to feel less pressured after the holiday, allowing them to make more thoughtful purchases. “Those deals make the purchases feel smarter and intentional,” she added. The post-Christmas rush is greatly influenced by the number of people still on vacation, increasing foot traffic in stores.

Exchanges and gift cards also contribute to a sense of flexibility. Arias mentioned that this often encourages shoppers to spend more than the value of their gift cards. “People will often throw in more of their own money to get something in addition to the gift card,” she explained. This behavior enhances retailers’ sales significantly.

Personal Purchases Drive The Sales

Shoppers like Bernie Saad from Bartlett were on a mission to find holiday essentials. “We are in search of Christmas lights and wrapping paper,” she said. Her husband, William, added that they had already used some gift cards earlier in the day. “The kids got some cash from relatives, so that might be part of the day.”

At the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora, Lenny Jaimes, manager of the Michael Kors store, anticipated an increase in gift card usage following the holiday. He noted that many customers were still searching for items they didn’t manage to purchase before Christmas. “Most that come in are using gift cards and some come to see if we have more stock than we did at the end of the days leading up to Christmas,” Jaimes explained.

Shoppers like Julie Anderson from Manhattan reported that they were also taking advantage of post-holiday sales. After exchanging a purse, Anderson expressed satisfaction with her shopping experience. “I found what I wanted and I plan to stop at a few more places,” she said, emphasizing her search for bargains.

Similarly, Kenika Carter-Aldridge from Chicago visited the outlet mall with hopes of discovering lower prices. “I prefer to wait until after Christmas in order to really see what I want as opposed to just getting something and being done,” she stated, indicating a strategic approach to holiday shopping.

The continued enthusiasm for shopping after Christmas underscores the lasting impact of the holiday season on consumer behavior. As gift cards and cash provide opportunities for thoughtful purchases, retailers can expect a busy and profitable post-holiday period.
