A new historical book titled Chinese in Tehama County aims to illuminate the significant contributions of Chinese immigrants and their descendants who have shaped the region from the Gold Rush era into the 20th century. Scheduled for release on January 6, 2024, the book draws on original family histories, archival photographs, oral accounts, and local records to provide a comprehensive look at the experiences of these communities.

The project is deeply personal for Jessica Chew, a descendant of one of the local Chinese families. She expressed her gratitude, stating, “This book only exists because families recognized their loved ones in our collection… What began as photos labeled by my grandpa turned into historical conversations about each family’s contributions to America.” This sentiment underscores the emotional connection that many families have to their heritage.

Preserving a Rich Legacy

The book highlights the success of Red Bluff’s Historic Chinatown and details how Chinese families contributed to the region’s economic development. A gathering of descendants recently celebrated their heritage, sharing stories that are now featured in the book. Many of these narratives reflect the resilience and determination of the Chinese community in Tehama County.

The Helen & Joe Chew Foundation, which is overseeing the book’s release, has played a crucial role in compiling these stories. The foundation emphasized the importance of community contributions in making this project a reality. “We extend our deepest thanks to all of the families who helped make this book possible by opening their personal archives and sharing their stories,” said Chew.

The book presents a compilation of rare photographs, family archives, and community stories, documenting the enduring influence of the Chinese community in Chinatowns across Tehama County, including contributions that persisted until World War II.

Availability and Purchase Information

“We are eternally grateful for the photographs entrusted to us, many preserved across generations, which is the heart of this book and ensures these histories will live on.”

The book is currently available for preorder at a price of $40, which includes a complimentary shirt. Signed copies can be obtained through the Helen & Joe Chew Foundation, while unsigned editions can be purchased from Arcadia Publisher, Amazon, Walmart, and Target.

The cover of Chinese in Tehama County features an image of Joe Chew holding a Christmas ornament around his birthday on December 23, symbolizing the personal connection that many families have to their past.
