Santa Clarita Residents Oppose Proposed Courthouse Development
A public meeting held on November 12, 2023, at the Santa Clarita Activities Center has sparked significant opposition among local residents regarding a proposed eight-story courthouse. Representatives from the Judicial Council outlined plans for the courthouse, which would be located at the intersection of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, directly across from a shopping mall. The project aims to consolidate juvenile criminal cases from the entire San Fernando Valley and facilitate felony arraignments and trials from surrounding areas, in addition to providing civil and family law courtrooms.
Despite the potential benefits of additional family law courtrooms, local council candidate Denise Lite expressed her strong opposition to the courthouse’s proposed location. “Placing a regional courthouse in the heart of town on an already congested corridor will significantly degrade the quality of life we all enjoy here,” she stated during the meeting. Lite emphasized that the courthouse, similar in scale to the Van Nuys Courthouse, would disrupt the balance of the community, increasing criminal case activity and congestion while raising security concerns.
The proposed site is situated near residential neighborhoods such as The Summit, The Bungalows, Old Orchard, and The Woodlands, as well as educational institutions like College of the Canyons and the California Institute of the Arts. Lite and other residents voiced their concerns that the increased traffic and activity associated with the courthouse could obstruct emergency services, complicating access to local hospitals.
Lite called for a thoughtful approach to community development that reflects the values of Santa Clarita residents, urging decision-makers in Sacramento to reconsider the project’s impact on local residents. “Santa Clarita deserves thoughtful development that enhances our community’s well-being,” she remarked, stressing the need for public input.
Residents are encouraged to share their opinions on the courthouse proposal by contacting Kim Bobic at [email protected] by November 26, 2023. Lite warned that silence on the matter would be interpreted as acceptance of the proposal, which she firmly opposes as a candidate for the Santa Clarita City Council representing District 2.
In her efforts to safeguard the community’s character and quality of life, Lite reaffirmed her commitment to addressing the courthouse issue and continuing to participate in public discussions until significant amendments are made to the proposal. She emphasized the importance of community engagement in shaping a development that aligns with the interests and safety of Santa Clarita’s residents.
