Celebrated Engineer Kevin J. McAloon Remembered for His Passion and Legacy

Kevin J. McAloon, a distinguished electrical engineer and avid outdoorsman, passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Chicago, Illinois, to parents John H. McAloon and Eileen A. O’Sullivan McAloon, he left a remarkable legacy in both his professional and personal life.

McAloon’s education began at Notre Dame Academy in Watsonville, California, followed by high school at St. Ignatius High School in Chicago. After graduating, he served two years in the U.S. Army, an experience that shaped his character and work ethic. He later pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Detroit and a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California.

With a career spanning over three decades in the aerospace industry, McAloon worked with prominent companies including Douglas Aircraft, Northrop, and ultimately TRW, where he dedicated 23 years before retiring in 1992. Following his retirement, he continued to contribute to the field as a part-time consultant at TRW and Northrop Grumman for an additional nine years.

A Life Beyond Engineering

Outside of his professional achievements, McAloon was passionate about outdoor activities, particularly motorcycle riding. He enjoyed both dirt and street riding, embarking on local and cross-country trips with his children. His love for physical fitness extended to running, where he completed four marathons, three of which he shared with his son, alongside countless 10K races.

As his running days concluded, McAloon embraced cycling, frequently riding on the scenic Palos Verdes peninsula and exploring the farm roads of the Sacramento Valley. His fascination with farming technology reflected his curiosity and adaptability throughout life.

McAloon is survived by his four children, including Karen, two grandchildren, Jack and Madeleine, and four nieces and nephews: Jack, Maureen, Jim, and Kathy. His family fondly remembers him for his wit, charm, kindness, and a deep love of salt, along with his distinctive Irish humour.

In a heartfelt tribute, his family noted, “He will be missed.” They added that he had always focused on precision and economy in his words, but they felt compelled to share the warmth and vibrancy he brought to their lives.

Kevin J. McAloon’s legacy as an engineer and a devoted family man will resonate with all who knew him, ensuring that his memory is cherished for years to come.
