Community Mourns the Passing of John Paul Kirk at 94
It is with profound sadness that the family of John Paul Kirk, Sr. announces his passing at the age of 94 on December 9, 2025. Surrounded by loved ones, including his wife of 73 years, Alice, and their children, John left behind a legacy of love, service, and community engagement that will be remembered by many.
Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest of ten siblings. He maintained strong ties to his roots, frequently returning to Ashland to connect with family and lifelong friends. After graduating from Clay County High School in 1949, John enlisted in the Army Air Corps, which later became the United States Air Force. His military service included teaching aircraft electronics at Amarillo Air Force Base, where he met Alice. They married on December 27, 1952.
Following their marriage, John and Alice relocated to Atlanta, where John pursued further education at Southern Tech. He later returned to college at the age of 76, earning a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University. His passion for flying led him to obtain a small plane pilot’s license, which he held for 50 years, along with several ratings including instrument, multiengine, and commercial.
John’s professional journey saw him working in various roles, including a stint in Bogotá, Colombia, with an oil company. Upon returning to the United States, the couple settled in Torrance, California, where John established a successful financial planning and investment firm, retiring after over 50 years in the industry.
His commitment to community service was evident throughout his life. John held numerous leadership positions, including president of the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club, and served on the board of The Arc South Bay and the Torrance YMCA. He was also involved with Toastmasters International and served as secretary of the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his professional and community work, John was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach since 1961. He was instrumental in establishing the church’s endowment fund and served on various boards and committees, leaving a lasting impact on the congregation.
John is survived by his wife, Alice, and their three children: John Kirk (Mindy), Kathy McCandless (Richard), and Rebecca Kirk. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another grandchild expected in January 2026.
A memorial service will be held on January 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating John’s remarkable life and contributions to his community.
