North Carolina Tar Heels Dominate December with Stellar Defense
The North Carolina Tar Heels have showcased a remarkable defensive prowess throughout December, establishing a solid identity as a formidable team. With one game remaining in the month, the Tar Heels are set to face the Florida State Seminoles in their Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opener on December 30, 2023, at the Dean E. Smith Center. In six games played this month, North Carolina has not allowed more than 70 points in any match, a key factor in their unbeaten streak.
North Carolina’s defensive performance has been impressive, particularly highlighted by their road victory against the Kentucky Wildcats. Entering that game, Kentucky boasted an average of over 88 points per game. However, the Tar Heels managed to limit the Wildcats to just 64 points, marking a significant achievement. They restricted Kentucky’s shooting to a 43.4 percent from the field and a mere 7.7 percent from three-point range, both of which represent the Wildcats’ lowest statistics of the season.
Following the Tar Heels’ 67-64 victory over Kentucky, head coach Hubert Davis emphasized the team’s defensive focus, which has become evident throughout December. On average, North Carolina has allowed only 61 points per game this month. This includes a notable performance against the Ohio State Buckeyes, where the Tar Heels restricted Ohio State to 70 points. Prior to facing North Carolina, Ohio State had scored at least 82 points in three consecutive games.
Additionally, the Tar Heels effectively contained Ohio State’s Bruce Thornton, limiting him to 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 0-of-4 from beyond the arc. This performance is particularly noteworthy given that Thornton entered the game averaging 21.1 points per game.
As the season progresses, North Carolina’s commitment to defense will be crucial for their success. Players such as Veesaar and Wilson are expected to continue anchoring the frontcourt, providing the necessary strength to maintain their defensive dominance. The Tar Heels aim to carry this momentum into their upcoming match, solidifying their position as one of the top teams in college basketball.
