Shedeur Sanders Reflects on Growth and Challenges Ahead of Steelers Match
Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders is gearing up for his sixth start as the team prepares to host the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 28, 2025. Having faced a mix of triumphs and challenges this season, Sanders emphasizes that his experiences have shaped his development in the NFL.
In recent games, Sanders has showcased moments of brilliance, including a stunning 60-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Jeudy during a close 31-29 loss to the Tennessee Titans on December 7. Yet, his journey has not been without setbacks. He threw three interceptions against the Bears and two against the Bills, with one interception in the Chicago game attributed to a miscommunication with Jeudy.
Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees highlighted Sanders’ ability to adapt and process information under pressure. “You saw [Sanders] process that information and get through his answers on time,” Rees stated on December 24, noting that this skill allowed the team to function efficiently against the Bills.
Despite early struggles, Sanders has shown significant improvement since stepping in for Dillon Gabriel, who left the game against the Ravens on November 16 due to a concussion. At that point, Sanders had yet to take a snap with the first-team offense. His performance against the Bills, where he completed 20 of 29 passes for 157 yards, included one touchdown and two interceptions, reflecting a clearer understanding of the game.
“I would say I improved in experience,” Sanders said during a Zoom conference on December 23. “Failing — I think those are all building blocks to be able to have success.” He expressed gratitude for the learning opportunities that have arisen from his challenges, viewing them as essential to his growth both as a player and a member of the Browns organization.
The Browns’ struggles this season are evident, with a record of 3-12. Gabriel, a third-round pick, struggled as a starter, going 1-5 while throwing six touchdowns and two interceptions. Sanders, a fifth-round pick, has a similar starting record of 1-4, having faced considerable difficulties during his debut against the Ravens.
Sanders acknowledged the pressures of facing a formidable defense like the Ravens and reflected on the importance of feeling comfortable in high-stakes situations. “That last drive, that’s when I felt comfortable,” he said. “I knew I could get back to being myself.”
There has been speculation regarding Kevin Stefanski‘s coaching decisions and their impact on Sanders’ performance. Critics have suggested that the coach set Sanders up for failure, but this narrative overlooks the broader context. With the Browns’ struggling offensive line and injuries to key players, including tight end David Njoku, the challenges facing Sanders are multifaceted.
Stefanski remains supportive of Sanders, stating his confidence in the young quarterback’s work ethic and potential. “I get to see the work that Shedeur puts into his craft on a daily basis,” he said, emphasizing the importance of trust built through collaboration and communication.
As the Browns prepare for their match against the Steelers, the focus will be on how well Sanders can leverage his experiences to lead the team. With both the quarterback’s and the coach’s futures uncertain, the upcoming games will be critical for establishing trust and confidence moving forward.
The Steelers come into the game with a record of 9-6, presenting another formidable challenge for the Browns. The kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland.
