UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, Arlington Seguin secured their playoff spot with a nail-biting 23-22 victory over Mansfield Summit last night at Vernon Newsom Stadium. The pivotal moment came from senior wide receiver Johnaven Polk, who executed a stunning 32-yard pass on a fake punt in the final minutes, sealing the win in a do-or-die clash for the last playoff position in the District 3-5A Division II.

With only three minutes remaining and Seguin leading by a slim one-point margin, the Cougars faced a critical 4th-and-7 from their own 43-yard line. “We worked on that play in practice this week, but not in that kind of wind,” Polk stated. His heroics ensured that Mansfield Summit wouldn’t have the opportunity to regain possession and mount a comeback.

Arlington Seguin (7-3, 5-3 in 3-5A Division II), now ranked No. 15 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class 5A area rankings, has clinched their second consecutive playoff appearance and the ninth in school history. They will enter the playoffs as the fourth seed, facing a challenging road game in the first round.

On the other hand, Mansfield Summit (6-4, 5-3), currently No. 12 in the 5A area, will miss the playoffs for the second straight year after five consecutive appearances from 2018 to 2023. The Jaguars’ final possession—ending with an incompletion in the end zone—left coach Channon Hall reflecting on their missed opportunities. “I felt good about the way we were coming back in the second half,” Hall remarked.

The game echoed the previous season’s playoff scenario, where Seguin had triumphed 36-28 over Summit. Once again, the Cougars displayed their resilience, transforming an 8-8 halftime deadlock into a commanding 23-8 lead through two quick touchdowns.

Polk, who also contributed significantly on the ground with 24 yards on six carries, helped his team regain control with Wildcat touchdowns from 10 and 4 yards out. “It was only the second game I’ve run from the Wildcat this season,” he added, showcasing his versatility as both a runner and passer.

Meanwhile, Summit fought back valiantly, led by senior quarterback Ian Gebhardt, who rushed for 152 yards on 18 carries. After briefly exiting due to injury, Gebhardt returned to orchestrate scoring drives, narrowing the gap to just one point with a late touchdown run.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, marked by an unusual number of penalties and turnovers. Summit’s promising drive was halted at the Seguin 5-yard line, and a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown by Seguin was negated by a flag, highlighting the game’s tension.

As the dust settles, Arlington Seguin looks ahead to their playoff matchup, while Mansfield Summit reflects on a season filled with highs and lows. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Seguin performs in the postseason.
