UPDATE: The Kansas City Chiefs have announced a devastating roster decision just days before their crucial Christmas Day game against the Denver Broncos. In a shocking move, the team has placed four star players on injured reserve, marking a significant blow as they look to salvage their season.

For the first time in over a decade, the Chiefs are out of playoff contention, and with just two games remaining, the stakes couldn’t be higher. They will enter the matchup against the Broncos on December 25, 2023, with a depleted squad, as they prepare to start a backup quarterback for the second consecutive game following Patrick Mahomes’ devastating season-ending ACL injury.

In a statement released on social media, the Chiefs confirmed the placement of Rashee Rice, Tyquan Thornton, Trent McDuffie, and Jaylen Watson on injured reserve. “We have placed CB Trent McDuffie, WR Rashee Rice, WR Tyquan Thornton, and CB Jaylen Watson on Reserve/Injured. We have signed Practice Squad players DE Ethan Downs, CB Melvin Smith, and TE Tyreke Smith to active roster contracts. We have activated CB Nazeeh Johnson from Reserve/Injured,” the team tweeted.

Rice, who suffered a concussion in Week 15, missed last weekend’s loss to the Tennessee Titans, ending his season with 571 yards and five touchdowns in just eight games. McDuffie, dealing with a knee injury, has not played since Week 14. Thornton also sustained a concussion in Week 15 and was sidelined during Week 17, while Watson is recovering from a groin injury incurred last weekend.

The Chiefs now face a critical moment as they navigate their final games. The absence of key players puts immense pressure on the remaining roster, forcing the team to rely heavily on less experienced players. The emotional toll on fans and the team alike is palpable, as this season has not gone as hoped.

As they prepare for the Christmas Day showdown, the Chiefs will need to rally together to overcome these challenges. Looking ahead, the impending return of Mahomes remains uncertain, with speculation that he may not be ready for the start of the 2026 NFL season following his recent surgery to repair his torn ACL and PCL.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Chiefs attempt to regroup and take on the Broncos in what promises to be an eventful matchup. The clock is ticking, and fans will be eager to see how this unfolding situation impacts the game on Christmas Day.
